Mumbai has always been the big apple of Spine Surgery for our country. Stalwarts like Dr. K. T.
Dholakia, Dr. K. V. Chaubal, Dr. A. V. Bavdekar and Dr. V. T. Ingalhalikar did some
revolutionary work in the 1980s and 90s creating the Association of Spine Surgeons of India
(ASSI). However, there was no local city chapter or society. The trend for specialist practicing
exclusive spine surgery started picking up in the second half of 1990s. During this time one of
the first teaching courses in Spine Surgery was organized in Mumbai.
